A bachelor’s level engineer with at least two years’ of experience in industry or in research laboratory will also be considered. The position involves multidisciplinary, team-based research focused on the biomechanics if the injured, reconstructed, and replaced knee.   We are looking for an individual with the following character traits, abilities, and skills: - Interest in musculoskeletal biomechanics with applications in the knee joint focusing on orthopedic soft tissue injury and repair. - Demonstrated ability to work in multidisciplinary teams including engineers, post-doctoral students, orthopaedic surgeons, medical students, therapists, radiologists, and statisticians. - Interest in mechanical characterization of cadaveric biological tissues focusing on the knee joint using robotic manipulators and tissue-level testing (e.g., tensile testing of ligament properties). - Interest in design, development, and testing of novel measurement tools to assess patient knee contact mechanics during surgery using rapid prototyping and computer modeling. - Experience in technical writing including protocol development (e.g., for Institutional Review Board and laboratory studies), code documentation, and manuscript preparation. - Ability to clearly communicate and present engineering topics in layman’s terms to non-engineers. - Willingness to work in areas outside of expertise. - Willingness to guide, mentor, and manage high school students, undergraduate engineers, medical students, and clinical residents and fellows. - Ability to work independently within timelines using critical thinking skills towards a long-term vision. - Experience in mechanical design using software tools such as SolidWorks or Fusion 360 demonstrated through focused projects including senior design and MS projects. - Demonstrated expertise using scientific computing software, such as a MATLAB, applied to techniques in data processing (e.g., logical indexing), linear algebra (e.g., matrix transformations), numerical analysis (e.g., Newton algorithms), systems and signals (e.g., digital filtering), and data visualization (e.g., box plots). - Demonstrated experience with creating control systems and data acquisition using Arduino or National Instrument DAQ controllers in software such as Visual Studio or LabView. - Experience using motion capture technology and associated 3D kinematic analysis. - Familiarity with software tools (e.g., MIMICS, MeshLab) for image processing and 3D reconstruction of medical image data from MRI and CT. - Familiarity with reverse engineering software tools (e.g., Geomagic Design X, Studio, Wrap) - Experience with software required to create and run finite element models (e.g., ABAQUS, Truegrid, FEBio). - Coding experience using Python language (especially with ABAQUS) a positive, but not a requirement.

A candidate will meet with his supervisor on a weekly basis and will discuss his experimental plan and research direction.   Qualified candidate must have a recent Ph.D. and/or M.D. in immunology, metabolism, biochemistry, molecular and cellular biology, bone biology or a related field and have a record of peer reviewed publications. Strong expertise in immunology, metabolism, molecular biology techniques, biochemical and cell signaling techniques and manipulating genetic mutant mice is preferred. High level of motivation and independence and the ability to think critically are expected. Ideal candidates must have good written/oral communication skills in English. Working with colleagues who love what they do and are deeply committed to our Mission, you too can be part of our transformation across the enterprise   Research Coordinator Spine Service - Schwab Full-Time 9am-5pm   DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:   Clinical and Regulatory responsibilities:   - Oversees and conducts the informed consent process on studies as appropriate (requires appropriate training and certification of human research subjects training).     - Manages data collection specific to research studies including but not limited to the performance of measurements for applicable studies, collection of clinical data from patients directly, and manages the performance of all other duties as put forth in the protocol.  This includes the supervision of multidisciplinary teams involved in the successful conduct of the study as well as research assistants I and II assigned to independent research studies. - Spearheads efforts to meet patient enrollment targets related to independent research studies. To that end, develops and implements various recruitment strategies.  - Ensures subject research visits and follow-ups are scheduled within the protocol specified time frame and that all required assessments and procedures are performed per the protocol. This requires coordination with both the research subject, either by phone, email, or mail per compliance and with physician office staff and ancillary departments (radiology, operating room staff, pathology, etc.). - Ensures accuracy of personnel transcribing data from a paper case report form (CRF) into an electronic format.   - Manages and executes IRB submissions for initial approvals, re-approvals, amendments, etc. Ensures timeliness and accuracy of submissions and no lapses in approvals for the study.  Directs research assistants in this effort as well. - Coordinates with Principal Investigator, ancillary department, central research administration, and compliance office to help ensure that clinical research and related activities are performed in accordance with federal and HSS regulations and sponsoring agency policies and procedures. - Performs advanced data queries when needed. Provides timely reports to Institutional Review Board, Principal Investigator, National Institutes of Health and/or sponsor for each research project. - Participates in the development of new protocols, prospective databases and new initiatives taken on by the department.  This may include independent design of databases and tools to facilitate data collection as required for specific projects (calendars, schedules, tracking logs). - Represents the Principal Investigator in departmental audits as well as external audits performed by representatives of the sponsor for each clinical research project.  Works closely with HSS internal monitor for guidance on these activities. - Collaborates with the research team and research administration, as needed, to ensure that research subjects are treated in accordance with all mandated requirements.  Ensures that standards regarding subject registration, protocol specific tests, and required documentation are adhered to.  Reports deviations as appropriate and resolves issues when possible.  Escalates issues to supervisor as needed. - Prioritizes and schedules work activities to ensure that workflow is controlled and meets the need of the department. Communicates and maintains institutional/departmental policies, standard operating procedures, quality standards, improvement initiatives and external legal regulations/regulatory requirements.  - Knowledge of good clinical practice for the handling of specimens and blood may be required. - Maintains and enhances professional growth through participation in seminars, professional affiliations, and internal training sessions to keep abreast of trends in the field of research data management. A qualified candidate has the ability to communicate in an effective manner with management, clinical staff, external sponsors and patients at HSS.  They may be asked to conduct procedures in the operating room including but not limited to blood processing, video, nerve conduction testing, photographs, applying devices and sensory testing.    MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS: Education/Training:   - Bachelor’s degree - ACRP, SOCRA, or similar certification preferred Experience:                 - 2-5 years’ experience in clinical research - Proficient use of computers and software - Knowledge of Orthopaedic and/or Rheumatologic terminology is preferred but not required.  Qualifications: The successful candidate must have at least 2 years’ experience in Clinical Research. Strong organizational and problem solving skills as well as excellent written and communication skills are essential. In addition, HSS is part of the TRI-Institute and on the research-mile of biomedical excellence shared with its neighbors like Rockefeller University, Sloan Kettering Institute, and Weill Cornell Medical College.   Postdoctoral Fellow positions are available in the “Spine Development and Regeneration” laboratory of Dr. Chitra Dahia, to understand the cellular and molecular basis of intervertebral disc degeneration and associated back pain that affects millions of people worldwide, and to develop strategies for disc regeneration. The goal of our current research is to determine the role of crucial developmental molecules including Shh/ Wnt signaling pathways and transcription factors like Brachyury for the regulation of disc growth and maintenance. The research will employ novel genetic mouse models, organ culture, and surgical pre-clinical rodent model systems established in the Dahia lab for developing strategies for prevention of disc degeneration and for its regeneration.   Candidates with a recent Ph.D. degree in Developmental Biology, Cell and Molecular Biology or Biochemistry are desirable. Expertise in mouse genetics, microscopy, gold-standard techniques of cell and molecular biology, computational biology and writing skills are required. Works closely with HSS internal monitor for guidance on these activities. - Assists Attending MDs with academic tasks, such as preparing PowerPoint slides and conducting literature searches for presentations as requested. - Responsible for the handling, packaging, and shipping of dangerous goods under supervision and in compliance with State and Federal regulations.  These specimens may include tissue, blood, dry ice, and chemicals.  Certification in these procedures is required in accordance with Federal Regulations.  Knowledge of good clinical practice for the handling of specimens and blood may be required. - Maintains and enhances professional growth through participation in seminars, professional affiliations, and internal training sessions to keep abreast of trends in research and the field of anesthesiology. - Other duties and projects as designated by Assistant Director, Research.
