The Research Technician will participate in translational research projects in autoimmune and musculoskeletal diseases. The research technician will be part of interdisciplinary teams that use cutting edge molecular and genomic approaches, animal models, and patient-derived samples to study immune cell function and inflammatory processes involved in autoimmune diseases, tissue injury, and repair. We also prefer that applicants have strong writing skills, can maintain a high level of professionalism, and are comfortable working with patients and their families. This is an excellent opportunity for recent graduates who plan to apply to medical school, but we are also open to other qualified individuals interested in healthcare and/or clinical research.   An integral member of the research team in compliance with all regulatory, institutional, and departmental requirements.  Participates in all aspects of clinical research and quality assurance of data for a specific project(s) as assigned.   Responsible for clinical and data management activities associated with clinical research at a service specific level.  Performs data collection, data entry and analysis for studies as appropriate.    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:   Clinical and Regulatory responsibilities:   - Oversees and conducts the informed consent process on studies as appropriate (requires appropriate training and certification of human research subjects training).     - Manages data collection specific to research studies including but not limited to the performance of measurements for applicable studies, collection of clinical data from patients directly, and manage the performance of all other duties as put forth in the protocol.   - Spearheads efforts to meet patient enrollment targets related to independent research studies. To that end, develops and implements various recruitment strategies.  - Ensures accuracy of personnel transcribing data from a paper case report form (CRF) into an electronic format.   - Manages and executes IRB submissions for initial approvals, re-approvals, amendments, etc… Ensures timeliness and accuracy of submissions and no lapses in approvals for the study.   - Compiles and assists in analyzing data in preparation for a presentation, sponsor/regulatory agency, publication, etc… with the assistance of project investigator  - Performs data queries reconciliation when needed. Provides timely reports to Institutional Review Board, Principal Investigator, National Institutes of Health and/or sponsor for each research project.  - Participates in the development of new protocols, prospective databases and new initiatives taken on by the department.  This may include independent design of databases and tools to facilitate data collection as required for specific projects (calendars, schedules, tracking logs) - Represents the Principal Investigator in departmental audits as well as external audits performed by representatives of the sponsor for each clinical research project.  Works closely with HSS internal monitor for guidance on these activities. - Collaborates with the research team and research administration, as needed, to ensure that research subjects are treated in accordance with all mandated requirements.  Ensures that standards regarding subject registration, protocol specific tests, and required documentation are adhered to.  Reports deviations as appropriate and resolves issues when possible.  Escalates issues to supervisor as needed. - Prioritizes and schedules work activities to ensure that workflow is controlled and meets the need of the department. Communicates and maintains institutional/departmental policies, standard operating procedures, quality standards, improvement initiatives and external legal regulations/regulatory requirements.  - Prepares all required internal reports on activity, on volume, and census reports as needed.  - Responsible for the handling, packaging, and shipping of dangerous goods under supervision and in compliance with State and Federal regulations.  These specimens may include tissue, blood, dry ice, and chemicals.  Certification in these procedures is required in accordance with the Federal Regulations.  Knowledge of good clinical practice for the handling of specimens and blood may be required. - Maintains and enhances professional growth through participation in seminars, professional affiliations, and internal training sessions to keep abreast of trends in the field of research data management.   A qualified candidate has the ability to communicate in an effective manner with management, clinical staff, external sponsors and patients at HSS.

Ideal candidates will be highly motivated individuals whose primary responsibility will be to investigate the role of a novel B cell subset, ABCs (Autoimmunity/Age-Associated B cells), in autoimmunity and inflammation. The main focus of the lab is to exploit state-of-the-art molecular and genomic approaches, animal models, and patient-derived samples to dissect the cellular and molecular networks that become dysregulated in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, Rheumatoid Arthritis, and Musculoskeletal Disorders (please see our recent work in Nature Immunology, Nature Communications, and Annals of Rheumatic Diseases). Successful candidates will have a Ph.D. or M.D. degree, a background in cellular and molecular immunology, a strong work ethic, and the ability to work independently. Conducts literature searches; actively participates in development meetings; reviews and edits protocol document; prepares study initiation documents. - Prepares initial drafts of protocols and manuscripts as requested by the Principal Investigator or Assistant Director, Research. - Performs IRB submissions for initial approvals, re-approvals, amendments, etc.  Prepares, submits and files IRB and all regulatory documents, ie., data collection sheets, protocol amendments, protocol deviations, adverse event forms, etc. - Prepares information required for reports to research administration as needed. - Ensures that all research related regulatory, institutional, and departmental compliance requirements are met as appropriate. - Conducts statistical data analysis and prepares statistical graphs and tables in preparation for research presentations, abstract and manuscript preparation or for other publications as requested by the Principal Investigator.  - Provides timely progress reports (especially regarding enrollment) for each research project at regular intervals determined by the Assistant Director, Research or Principal Investigator.  - Prepares and maintains orderly files for all research studies, including both electronic and hard copy paper files in regulatory binders. Works closely with HSS internal monitor for guidance on these activities. - Assists Attending MDs with academic tasks, such as preparing PowerPoint slides and conducting literature searches for presentations as requested. - Responsible for the handling, packaging, and shipping of dangerous goods under supervision and in compliance with State and Federal regulations.  These specimens may include tissue, blood, dry ice, and chemicals.  Certification in these procedures is required in accordance with Federal Regulations.  Knowledge of good clinical practice for the handling of specimens and blood may be required. - Maintains and enhances professional growth through participation in seminars, professional affiliations, and internal training sessions to keep abreast of trends in research and the field of anesthesiology. - Other duties and projects as designated by Assistant Director, Research. Management of pilot project awards; Development of member surveys pertaining to shared services; Management of each centers operations budget P/L, expenses, and personnel effort; Maintenance of website content and listservs; Coordination of research conferences, seminars and retreats, including Internal and External Advisory Board meetings.   Additional Duties include: - Operations improvement – Being on-point for improving operations in the RI on behalf of the faculty; - Interconnections – Serving as a proactive interface with administrative operations (and challenges) within the RI and with other HSS administrative and operational areas that impact research (HR; Materials Mgmt); - Faculty review support – Leading efforts around systematizing RI faculty contractual metrics and in collaboration with Post Award Administration, conducting productivereviews withfaculty member; - Link to Research Administration –Ensuring successful overall linkages as well as helping forge productive initial connections with Sponsored Program Office and Post Award Administration; - Shared research infrastructure – Being responsible for shared research infrastructure; - WCMC liaison – Serving as HSS liaison working with WCMC on vivarium (located in the RI building and managed by WCMC) and other collaborative research infrastructure and cores; - Scientific review support – Coordinating regular, rotating external program reviews of science in collaboration with the CSO – focused on continued relevance and improvement; - Research space – Proactively leading the collection, analysis, and presentation of data related to research space and related productivity measures in order to help CSO and other leaders make increasingly data-driven decisions on the allocation and reallocation of benches; - Core facility management – Managing/overseeing core research facilities in the Institute; assisting the VP and Finance administration in overseeing other HSS cores; leading/coordinating efforts related to making core research facilities effective and supportive of faculty researchers while also strategic and efficient in terms of institutional investment or subsidy; and leading proactive assistance and supportive oversight to cores; - Research center review – Leading the development of review processes of major research centers/programs and related organizational structures in the RI— to ensure continued usefulness and investment along both scientific productivity and financial/business effectiveness and sustainability measures; - IT liaison – Serving on the Research IT Committee, coordinating any future/expanded IT support to the RI and being the key point person; - Innovation Institute liaison –Facilitating productive faculty interactions with the HSS Innovation Institute and its intellectual property, MTAs, and technology commercialization activities. - Interacting with Public Relations and Media to highlight RI accomplishments; - Participate in internal/external audits - Create, update and maintain RI policies/procedures - Participates in the Institute's committees as assigned. - Performs other related duties.
