Under the direction of the Core Director, this analyst will provide study design and statistical analysis support for a variety of projects for the HSS Department of Medicine, a nationally and internationally recognized center for leading-edge musculoskeletal and rheumatologic care and research. This role will contribute to the advancement of research with a multidisciplinary team of clinicians, scientists, engineers, and other statisticians to leverage unique healthcare data (in the form of medical images, clinical data, and beyond) and implementing appropriate study design, evaluation tools, and methods associated with various research projects. Additionally, this position will collaborate and advise faculty on the most appropriate statistical methods to apply to research design and outcomes analysis.   The analyst will also be responsible for helping to execute the Department’s Machine Learning strategy with the mission of creating new and improved methods for assessing and predicting disease outcomes and biology at Hospital for Special Surgery. The analyst will have opportunities for authorship on publications stemming from his/her work and will play a key role in producing and sharing the results the broader scientific community.   Essential Tasks/Responsibilities: • Assist in protocol development by implementing proper study design methodology, performing sample size and power calculations, and generating randomization schedules. • Make recommendations for appropriate statistical analyses and design to investigators and study team. • Perform statistical queries, analyses, and evaluation as assigned through the Biostatistics Core. • Develop robust algorithms and techniques using image analytics and deep learning across a variety of large and diverse medical image datasets for the purpose of developing ML models. •Responsible for accuracy and timeliness of summary reports, tables, and figures to investigators and study team. • Collaborate on grants, presentations and manuscripts submitted for publication, including writing methods sections and analysis plans for incorporation into protocol and grant submissions. • Contribute to teaching biostatistical methodology to medical students, residents, fellows, and other Hospital staff. • Stay informed of statistical techniques as applied to musculoskeletal research issues by reading journals and/or attending courses/programming meetings. • Collaborate with other members of the Core by suggesting changes or improvements to existing analytic code, study design protocols, and any proposed analytic methods.   Education/Experience • Master's Degree in related field of epidemiology or biostatistics. • 1-2 years required (1-3 years preferred) of biostatistical consulting experience, either within the academic curriculum or as part of a consulting service unit. • Background in Machine Learning techniques and practical experience in evaluating the performance of ML algorithms on test and real clinical data. • Experience in musculoskeletal research is preferred.   Competencies • SAS is the preferred statistical package within the HSS Biostatistics Core, but candidates with experience in other statistical packages (R, SPSS, Stata, Python) are encouraged to apply. • Intermediate proficiency in data preparation, machine learning and/or data science, descriptive analyses, comparative statistics, and advanced statistical modeling. • Possess the ability to facilitate the flow of information through effective written and oral communication. • Possess ability to interpret technical medical data and generate sound recommendations to support clinical research efforts. • Maintain ability to work independently and take responsibility for timeliness of analytic reports and other deliverables. • Demonstrate good organization skills, effective time management, and the ability to manage several concurrent tasks. • Maintain a team-oriented approach and possesses the ability to cultivate a positive and collegial workplace relationships – always demonstrating integrity and ethics. • Appreciate and understand the connection between individual goals, departmental goals, and the organizational mission – while continually seeking ways to improve personally and as a team.

Under the direction of the physician, you will function as a physician extender by ensuring efficient flow of patient visits during office hours. He/she will work closely with the physician to ensure a cohesive approach to injury management and prevention. Key responsibilities will include preparing medical records for client visits, providing medical information to clinicians to allow for personalization of evaluations, and coordinating/overseeing the follow-up process. The CRC will be in compliance with all regulatory, institutional, and departmental requirements; participate in all aspects of research management and quality assurance of data for the Principal Investigator.   The successful applicant for the position of Clinical Research Coordinator will be a highly motivated and organized individual who is able to perform a variety of different tasks essential to the implementation and successful completion of a clinical study. He or she should be knowledgeable of regulations regarding Human Subjects research and assure HIPAA compliance. The applicant must be able to multitask and prioritize research projects.   A qualified candidate will have the ability to communicate in an effective manner with management, clinical staff, external sponsors and patients at HSS. The candidate will also have good interpersonal and writing skills, as he or she will interface directly with patients and medical staff on a routine basis. He or she will be flexible, as the job description may evolve as studies progress. The applicant must be available on site at the main hospital.   Clinical and Regulatory responsibilities:   - Oversees and conducts the informed consent process on studies as appropriate (requires appropriate training and certification of human research subjects training).     - Manages data collection specific to research studies including but not limited to the performance of measurements for applicable studies, collection of clinical data from patients directly, and manages the performance of all other duties as put forth in the protocol.  This includes collaboration with multidisciplinary teams involved in the successful initiation and conduct of clinical research studies and clinical trials (clinical research administration, legal, finance, compliance, etc.). - Spearheads efforts to meet patient enrollment targets related to independent research studies. To that end, develops and implements various recruitment strategies.  - Ensures subject research visits and follow-ups are scheduled within the protocol specified time frame and that all required assessments and procedures are performed per the protocol. This requires coordination with both the research subject, either by phone, email, or mail per compliance and with physician office staff and ancillary departments. - Manages and executes IRB submissions for initial approvals, re-approvals, amendments, etc. Ensures timeliness and accuracy of submissions and no lapses in approvals for the study. - Coordinates with Principal Investigator, ancillary department, central research administration, and compliance office to help ensure that clinical research and related activities are performed in accordance with federal and HSS regulations and sponsoring agency policies and procedures. - Performs advanced data queries when needed. Provides timely reports to Institutional Review Board, Principal Investigator, Research Director, National Institutes of Health and/or sponsor for each research project. - Participates in the development of new protocols, prospective databases and new initiatives. This may include independent design of databases and tools to facilitate data collection as required for specific projects (calendars, schedules, tracking logs). - Collaborates with the research team and research administration, as needed, to ensure that research subjects are treated in accordance with all mandated requirements.  Ensures that standards regarding subject registration, protocol specific tests, and required documentation are adhered to.  Reports deviations as appropriate and resolves issues when possible.  Escalates issues to supervisor as needed - Assists in collecting, transporting, processing, and storing biospecimens such as blood obtained from research patients to the lab. Knowledge of good clinical practice for the handling of specimens and blood is preferred. - Maintains and enhances professional growth through participation in seminars, professional affiliations, and internal training sessions to keep abreast of trends in the field of clinical research and regenerative medicine.   MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS: Education/Training:   - Bachelor’s degree; Master’s preferred - ACRP, SOCRA, or similar certification preferred Experience:                 - 3-5 years experience in clinical research - Deep knowledge of FDA regulations for clinical trials - Strong organizational and problem solving skills, attention to detail, as well as excellent written and communication skills are essential - Proficient use of computers and software - Familiar with electronic data capture platforms such as RedCap and EMRs platforms (Epic). - Knowledge of Orthopaedic and/or Rheumatologic terminology is preferred but not required.

Daily responsibilities vary based on the number, type, and complexity of ongoing research, but may include: assignment of appropriate outcome measures in OBERD, collection of outcome measures, patient consent; study visit tracking; study visit coordination; data collection/entry; study reporting; abstract submission; and administrative study support & management (CRP/IRB submissions, annual continuing review submissions, investigator disclosure forms, regulatory reporting, and study voucher coordination). Typical studies include prospective and retrospective trials, outcome trials, non-interventional trials, multi-center trials and low-risk interventional trials. The clinical research assistant is part of the research team, compliant with all regulatory, institutional, and departmental requirements.   The successful candidate will have a working knowledge of EPIC and must be proficient in the use of computers and software.   Doctorate and at least 2 years experience in a hospital setting is required. Excellent oral and written communications skills are paramount due to the large number of professional interactions required for this position.   The successful candidate should possess exceptional organizational skills, time management skills, and the ability to manage several concurrent tasks. Complete proficiency in Microsoft Office and a statistical software package is mandatory.

Dr. Edwin Su is one of the leading hip resurfacing surgeons in the United States, having been involved in the clinical trials of this bone-preserving technique. During his fellowship in adult reconstructive surgery at Hospital for Special Surgery, Dr. Su trained in all the latest techniques of hip and knee replacement, minimally invasive surgery, joint reconstruction, and revision hip and knee replacement. The ability to type 45-60 words per minute and exceptional organizational strengths are required, along with excellent written and verbal communication skills.  Must be proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
