Physician Liaison

Overview:
The Physician Liaison will analyze referral patterns and optimize targeting of community physicians for in-person outreach for the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan/Brooklyn and the surrounding community. This position will work closely with the Senior Director of Community and Physician Engagement to optimize presentation of HSS services, and to develop robust relationships with potential referring physicians. The liaison will work to implement outreach strategies.
There will be a significant field component, through contacting physician offices (in person and virtual), gathering information, and implementation of outreach efforts to make HSS physicians more visible to community physicians, and ultimately enhancing referral relationships to drive demand for HSS services.
Physician Liaison Responsibilities:
- Identify potential opportunities for informal partnerships between community physicians and HSS physicians.
- Cultivate relationships with referring physicians that lead to personal introductions to physicians in assigned territory.
- Anticipate physicians needs ahead of in-person/virtual visit and be equipped with information and appropriate messaging (based on previous experiences, conversations, size and location of practice, referral patterns, etc).
- Build awareness of HSS locations, programs, and treatment advances
- Use independent judgment to identify and coordinate meetings between key referring physicians and HSS physicians (office/virtual visits, community events, etc.) that will result in the greatest impact for HSS.
- Analyze field intelligence and contribute to business insight through meaningful conversations with community providers to determine what advances would drive improved relationships.
- Develop innovative, strategic targeting strategies through analysis and interpretation of internal referral, demographic, and market research data to identify key opportunities for increased referral growth.
- Identifies, monitors and documents relationship histories, including details of contacts and meetings with providers and staff, by maintaining a relationship and contact management database.
- Display independent judgment by developing a physician outreach strategy that aligns with institutional priorities.
- Develop content for innovative, impactful collateral materials such as regional market brochures and educational materials to support outreach effectiveness.
- Arranging and leading community engagement campaigns and education/awareness efforts.

Research Assistant

The Clinical Research Assistant is responsible for data collection and data entry and may participate in data analysis. Studies will include a registry, retrospective trials, and outcomes trials. The Assistant is responsible for ensuring data quality, integrity, and compliance with all regulatory, institutional and departmental requirements. The Clinical Research Assistant will report to the Research Coordinator, and work directly with the physicians from the Sports Medicine Service, specifically the Co-Director of Research. The successful applicant must be available for 1-2 years.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Identify potential subjects via computer generated lists
- Obtain informed consent from patients who wish to participate in studies
- Send out emails to patients inviting them to participate in studies
- Act as a resource for patients regarding study consent forms
- Act as a liaison between physicians and study participants
- Obtain intra-operative data from surgeons during surgery
- Administer questionnaires to patients
- Coordinate patient visits as needed
- Serve as a contact person for patients with questions regarding study protocol
- Call patients between visits to ensure compliance and answer any questions
- Administer follow-up questionnaires by phone or email
- Enter data into an electronic database
- Organize and maintain paperwork related to the study
- Prepare Institutional Review Board (IRB) applications and submissions. Maintains files of IRB approvals and coordinates re-submissions in a timely manner

Dr. Drakos is an Orthopedic Surgeon specializing in foot and ankle surgery. Serving as an assistant to Dr. Drakos, duties will include assisting with patient evaluations, treatments, patient and family education. You will interact closely with patients and families and be an integral part of developing great patient and collegial relationships. Your role is essential to promoting a professional atmosphere through courteous communication, cooperation and respect for patients, visitors and members of the healthcare team. In addition, you will be responsible for upholding stellar customer service practices for patients and families, as well as acting as a liaison to the physician and hospital departments.
DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Provide health assessments, diagnosis and treatments for foot and ankle patients
- Conduct medical histories and physical examinations
- Manage post-operative patient care
- Order and review diagnostic studies and communicate results to patients and provide follow-up treatment and education
- Develop individual treatment plans for foot and ankle patients
- Assist office staff with peer-to-peer requests from insurance carriers during the prior authorization process
- Evaluate the need for medical necessity letters and complete them accordingly; complete other patient paperwork including disability, letters of restriction, return-to-work/school, Social Security etc.
- Facilitate communication between physician and hospital departments, department management and patients
- Work independently on assigned tasks with minimal supervision
- Promote cooperation through teamwork
- Complete all in-service learning requirements including but not limited to the annual in-service learning.
- Perform other duties as needed for effective and safe patient care

Overview:
Supporting the delivery of the highest quality of patient care, you will work in our state-of-the-art imaging facilities. Your primary focus will be to operate a magnetic resonance scanner to obtain images for use by physicians in the diagnosis and treatment of patients of all age categories. This will entail MRI examinations using GE equipment, while ensuring the highest standards of safety for patients. We will also rely on you to properly store and maintain equipment, instruct patients on exams, and accurately log and document related information.

Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner, Diabetes

The Physician Assistant (PA) or Nurse Practitioner (NP) is an advanced practice professional (APP). Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) PAs and NPs are committed to personalized, high-quality healthcare and are held to the same legal and ethical standards of care as physicians. Autonomously and in collaboration with healthcare professionals and other individuals, the PA or NP provides a full range of primary, acute, and specialty healthcare services, including:
- Diagnosing and treating acute and chronic conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, infections, and injuries
- Ordering, performing, and interpreting diagnostic tests such as lab work and x-rays
- Prescribing medications and other treatments
- Managing patients' overall care
- Counseling
- Educating patients on disease prevention and positive health and lifestyle choices
HSS PAs or NPs serve pediatric and adult patients in an extensive range of practice settings throughout the hospital and its local and regional ambulatory sites. Their specialty and subspecialty areas include: Adult Reconstruction and Joint Replacement (ARJR), Anesthesia (PACU/OSCU/SDU), Anticoagulation, Cardiology, Diabetes Care, Intensive Care, Metabolic Bone, Occupational Health, Pain Management, Pediatric Orthopedics, Post-Operative Care, Radiology, Spine, Trauma, Urology, Wound Care, and private practice (physician and surgeon offices).
The diabetes PA or NP position is an integral component of HSS commitment to promote quality care to our patients with endocrine illness and altered cognitive function. The diabetes PA or NP diagnoses, treats, and manages endocrine issues across multiple care settings including the pre-surgical screening, inpatient hospitalization, post-operative care settings, as well as non-operative care settings such as the infusion center. This includes providing urgent and emergent first responder roles to endocrine emergencies in patients hospitalized at HSS.
In addition, the Diabetes PA or NP will assist in providing follow up care for established patients as well as educate and elevate the practice of other members the interdisciplinary team regarding endocrine conditions
The Diabetes PA or NP role:
- Provides clinical consultation, assessment, diagnosis, and management of endocrine issues across multiple care settings.
- Manages patients with endocrine issues including acute and chronic glycemic control
- Educates clinical staff—physicians & surgeons (MDs), physician assistants (PAs), nurse practitioners (NPs), registered nurses (RNs), etc.—on diabetes complication prevention, and identification and treatment of endocrine issues
- Identifies contributing factors to endocrine issues and suggests environmental and pharmacological modifications to optimize for surgery and ensure post-operative success
- Educates the patient, the patient’s family, and any other support persons on care techniques regarding endocrine conditions
- Creates best practice for hyper/hypoglycemia prevention and increases the socialization of the best practices for HgA1C management regarding surgical optimization

Business Analyst

Overview:
The Service Lines Department is focused on strategic and operational support of the medical staff and their offices of those services, collaboratively defining strategy, and executing operational initiatives to support strategic goals. To that end, the Business Analyst will partner and work collaboratively with service line leadership to support departmental performance and standardization of KPIs across all service lines.
Reporting to the Senior Director of Physician Practice Optimization & Special Projects, the Business Analyst will be responsible for operational implementation of process changes and business standardization, subject matter expertise related to workflow optimization analysis, data visualization prep and management, and presentation support for Service Lines Chief Administrators. Serve as resource to provide depth support to the Service Lines teams on operating expense management, budgeting, capital planning, etc.
Key responsibilities:
- Identify operational challenges and suggest problem-solving strategies to enhance team effectiveness.
- Facilitate systems improvement to determine standards and priorities. Participate as team member by providing input and knowledge of systems operations and financials to achieve operational and strategic goals.
- Complete current and future state assessments, root cause analyses, organization, and environment analysis, formulate and present recommendations and action plans for improvement to Service Lines leadership.
- Create and maintain monthly status updates on strategic programs or initiatives with significant ROI to be used by leadership teams and governance committees.
- Create and maintain monthly performance metrics to be used by Service Chiefs as a tool to engage Medical Staff in Enterprise performance.
- Collaborate with HSS’ Center for Analytics, Modeling, and Performance (CAMP) team to create, manage, and optimize reporting and dashboard visualization tools.
- Provide in-depth support on operational logistics, including project management, operational management systems, and best practice performance standards.
- Assist Service Lines leaders in business plan documentation. Ensure asset optimization within service lines by presenting financial impact. Perform necessary research, recommend options, design financial models and methods, outline action plans and ensure implementation.
- Plan, coordinate, manage and lead annual operating and capital budget process for Service Lines.
- Supports revenue cycle by ensuring clinical billing is conducted in a timely manner and all related revenue procedures are captured.
- Partners with physicians and other organizational stakeholders in implementing operational and clinical policies and procedures that impact fiscal performance.
