The program offers opportunities to engage in translational research experiences highly relevant for individuals interested in furthering their career through medical school or other clinical training. The Postbacc Fellow (trainee) will gain aptitude in techniques of patient-centered clinical research, physiology, biomechanics, and data analysis and interpretation. The trainee will build skills in scientific communication in oral and written form by presenting to his peers and mentors at monthly research meetings; by formulating abstracts for presentation at major clinical and scientific conferences; and by preparing publications for submission to well-ranked orthopaedic specialty journals. Clinical shadowing experiences, attending Grand Rounds of clinical services, and participating in laboratory meetings of the Biomechanics Department will enrich the clinical and translational experience in preparation for graduate or medical school. A minimum 6-month commitment is preferred. The trainee will contribute immediately to on-going clinical research as part of an interdisciplinary clinical and translational research team consisting of arthroplasty surgeons, mechanical engineers, statisticians, and epidemiologists.   The trainee’s primary project is entitled, “Objective post-operative total knee arthroplasty (TKA) Laxity and its Correlation with Patient Perceptions of Knee Instability”. Knee instability is among the most common reasons for revision following TKA. Our long-term goal is to prevent TKA instability through evidence-based innovation of surgical techniques. The current project will relate patient perceptions of knee instability via patients’ self-reported symptoms with objective measurements of knee joint laxity. Establishing this link is important because it will yield quantitative mechanical laxity targets for intraoperative decisions (e.g., component alignment, choice of constraint, amount of ligament pie-crusting, and sparing or resecting posterior cruciate ligament (PCL)) to improve patient satisfaction post-TKA and to reduce the chance of revision surgery due to knee instability. The trainee will work as part of a highly productive, dynamic clinical and translational team of scientists and clinicians employing clinical and biomechanical approaches pioneered at HSS. Additional opportunities to contribute to on-going projects are possible. The PostBacc Fellow will be embedded within the Arthroplasty Service and the Department of Biomechanics and will be closely connected with the clinical practices of participating surgeons.

Under the supervision of the Principal Investigator, the Research Assistant will help conduct experiments involving clinical samples and genetic mice, including pain behavior and imaging studies, cell, and molecular biology experiments including cryosectioning, immunostaining and fluorescence microscopy, RNA in situs, RNA isolation, qPCR, and high throughput sequence analysis, data processing and statistical analysis. This individual will be an integral member of the research team in compliance with all regulatory, institutional, and departmental requirements. The candidate will play an integral role in day-to-day research activities in the lab and will be responsible of maintaining proper detailed laboratory records, data, databases and report timely to the Principal Investigator.

Working with colleagues who love what they do and are deeply committed to our Mission, you too can be part of our transformation across the enterprise.   Research Assistant  Full-Time   Position Summary:   The Research Assistant (RA) facilitates research within the Inflammatory Arthritis Center of Excellence, Division of Rheumatology, Department of Medicine at Hospital for Special Surgery.  The RA oversees the collection, storage and reporting of data in assigned clinical research studies.  Types of studies primarily include prospective, non-interventional and low risk interventional trials, investigator-initiated studies, NIH research grants, as well as industry-sponsored trials.  Research projects are, single site as well as multi-center collaborations.    The Research Assistant is part of a research team, compliant with all regulatory, institutional and departmental requirements and policies.    IAC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  - Manage variety of research tasks associated with assigned research project(s) as put forth in the study protocol; collaborate with multidisciplinary teams that may include radiology, basic science, laboratory services, hematology, etc. - Detailed familiarity with study documents including protocol, case report forms (CRFs), database and contents of the Investigation Site Study Binder; maintain and update each. - Serve as point of contact for research subjects. Facilitate completion of study-mandated visits and data collection (CRFs), facilitate in–office and electronic follow up for CRF completion, etc.  - Develop patient screening and study management processes/SOPs including phlebotomy, sample biorepository, shipping of hazardous materials, etc.  Document. - Conduct the informed consent process.  *Requires appropriate certification of human research subjects training (CITI), acquired immediately after start date. - Collect clinical data from subjects directly as well as from medical record and other in-hospital sources, i.e., EPIC. - Prioritize efforts to meet patient enrollment targets, implement various recruitment strategies.  - Establish electronic data capture (EDC) database for data collection and analysis (RedCAP); acquire advanced abilities to generate regular and ad hoc reports utilizing EDC audit features - Collaborate with the research team to ensure that research subjects are treated in accordance with all mandated protocol requirements; ensure that standards regarding subject documentation are adhered to; report deviations and work to resolve; escalate issues to senior research staff and PI as needed. - Under supervision of senior clinical research staff and with guidance from IRB office and Clinical Research Administration (CRA), the RA will pilot assigned research projects through HSS’s two-stage IRB approval process:  (1) initial Rheumatology Clinical Review Panel (CRP) and (2) full-board Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval.  Facilitate project amendments, updates and annual reviews; ensure timeliness and accuracy of submissions with no lapses in approvals for the study.  - Compile and assist in analyses of data in preparation for weekly research staff update meetings sponsor meetings, abstract submissions, publications, etc., with guidance from the Principal Investigator and Rheumatology Biostatistician.  - Assist with creating study presentations (PowerPoint), abstracts, posters, etc. for symposiums, meetings, conferences, etc.  Facilitate subsequent manuscript preparation & publication. - Maintain audit-ready status of all study documents & files.  Prepare and assist Principal Investigator with audits by CRA, study sponsor, regulatory bodies; consult with HSS internal monitor/ CRA for guidance on these activities. - Manage appropriate handling, packaging (e.g., dry ice) and shipping of dangerous goods (i.e., specimens such as blood, tissue) in compliance with state and federal regulations.  *Requires appropriate certification in biomaterial and hazardous material shipping scheduled shortly after start date. - Mandatory participation in HSS clinical research training and activities including Clinical Research Education Sessions (monthly) and Rheumatology Clinical Research Group (monthly),  Suggested attendance at Rheumatology Grand Rounds (weekly), CAP Conference (weekly), ACRP and SOCRA local chapter events (periodically) and related educational opportunities.    - Complete ad hoc, IAC-related projects and tasks from IAC Director, Associate Director and Manager to facilitate smooth research operations and communications. - The qualified candidate has the ability to communicate in an effective manner with clinical staff and patients at HSS.   - Initiative in developing and presenting one’s own research project and presenting at conference(s) is encouraged and supported. - The Research Assistant may be asked to conduct procedures in the operating room including, for example, blood sample acquisition, processing, photo/video, etc.  - Certification via SOCRA (Certified Clinical Research Coordinator, CCRP) or ACRP (Certified Clinical Research Associated, CCRA) preferred and supported.

With a focus on tissue repair, improving surgical outcomes, autoimmunity and inflammation, genomics, new treatments, and precision medicine, the impact of our discoveries determine future directions of musculoskeletal research to improve clinical outcomes best while serving the community in an environment that aspires to scientific excellence. The Administrative Coordinator position is a support role with the Research Institute under the purview of the Office of Research Administration, for which the overarching goal is to support the research activities of the HSS Faculty and Clinical Research Scientists, Postdoctoral Trainees, Postbaccalaureate Research Trainees, and Graduate Students. The Research Institute administrative team provides support in maintaining laboratory and office facilities, adheres to and upholds the policies and processes to facilitate research, including regulatory and compliance with both institutional and government guidelines.   JOB SUMMARY:   Administrative Support: - Provide comprehensive administrative support to Chief Research Officer and assigned Research Program(s) within the Basic Research Institute while handling his/her schedules, travel, calls, large seminars, and visitors. - Prioritize day-to-day responsibilities, projects, and special assignments and manage day-to-day administrative tasks, including but not limited to, creating spreadsheets, managing databases, preparing presentations, communicating with vendors, ordering necessary office supplies, reviewing incoming documents, mail-pick up, and acting as a liaison for facilities management. - Serve as the front desk point of contact for their assigned floor, welcoming visitors and addressing inquiries including training/orientation of new Institute members, visiting scholars and trainees (post-bac, post-doc and grad students). - Procure and maintain office and kitchenette supplies using the GHX and WorkDay systems and maintain physical and electronic files for appropriate functioning of the assigned research programs. - Liaison with pre-award and post-award administration when initiating financial transactions to assure grant (federal, foundation, gifts) compliance. - Provide administrative support to 6th floor faculty and lab members, and the Director of Basic Science Laboratories (issuing reminders for C-14 renewals, updating seating charts and lab bays). - Handles a high volume of accounts payables including: processing vendor invoices, check requests for travel and business reimbursements, cash receipt vouchers, reviewing journal entries, purchasing requisitions, payroll/Dimensions (schedules/leave/PTO/sick) and HR E-Req submissions. - Order and keep stock of kitchenette supplies for Research Institute, maintain a clean conference room/supply storage/kitchen area of 6th floor. - Keep copiers and fax machine filled (paper/staples/toner) and troubleshoot repairs. - Manage requests for 6th floor conference room usage and ensure maintenance of IT systems. - Regularly attends and participates in meetings with the Research Institute Directors and members of the Administrative Team. - Acts as back up support by filling in on an as-needed basis for general administrative functions, including but not limited to, calendaring, ordering of supplies, processing payments and invoices, and fielding requests and inquiries from external and internal parties within other research programs and/or floors.   Programmatic Responsibilities: - Assists in planning research themed programs, and academic activities for the Orthopedic Soft Tissue Program (OSTR) including coordination of agenda/travel logistics/honorarium/reimbursement for Lecturers and Speakers (3-4 per year). - Meeting room set-up/Committee notifications/agenda packet delivery and room take-down for OSTR (10 times/year), and any other special meetings/functions as scheduled. - Assist with program related data entry and data maintenance, collecting and managing related documentation. - Provides reception, clerical, administrative, financial, and organizational support to Scientists within assigned research programs including scheduling, coordinating meetings, hosting visitors, and managing general administrative tasks. - Coordinate program lectures and seminars: Responsible for arranging agenda, travel, logistics, and honorariums/reimbursements for Research Lecturers, and any other special guest seminars as scheduled. - Meeting room set-up & A/V/Committee notification/agenda packet delivery. - Assist in coordinating Institute seminars, create webinar meetings for the assigned Scientists and research programs including organizing in-house lectures, assure room set up and catering. - Assist in planning of academic activities, and perform related duties assigned or requested such as assisting Research Institute Director with event/program logistics, from planning to execution, food and beverage ordering.

The position requires the ability to learn and apply new techniques as developed. The position includes attending weekly laboratory meetings, presentations of work on a weekly basis at laboratory meetings, participating in collaborator phone conferences, preparation of IACUC submissions, being trained on online data capture systems and data analysis software, preparation of formal talks, poster presentations, manuscript preparation and submission, and completion of additional duties as delegated. Studies may also include genotyping and flow cytometry, and in vivo mouse experiments. - Animal studies will incorporate use of mouse models of autoimmunity. Technician will be responsible for assisting in surgical procedures, providing animal care, and tissue harvesting techniques and post euthanasia processing. - Clinical studies will involve interaction with the clinical coordinators for collection of patient samples, and processing the samples. - The technician will interact with the research clinical coordinator and research assistants to cross-reference laboratory studies with clinical variables and outcomes.
