HSS and New York Mets Baseball Club Upper Extremity Athlete Fellowship
The HSS and New York Mets Baseball Club Upper Extremity Athlete Fellowship is a clinically-based training program for physical therapists seeking to specialize in sports upper extremity physical therapy.
This non-accredited fellowship program's mission is to prepare each fellow for both the clinical and on field challenges experienced by Major League Baseball’s rehab and performance staff. This fellowship will accelerate professional development through the unique educational experiences which include mentoring, research opportunities, rehab progressions, surgical observation as well as on and off field player management. These experiences will allow each fellow to provide superior patient care and enhanced patient outcomes. This fellowship is designed to prepare each candidate with the tools and training required to work in Major League Baseball and be leaders in the field of sports physical therapy.
Time Commitment and Salary
The HSS and New York Mets Baseball Club Upper Extremity Athlete Fellowship is a full-time position, one year in duration. The fellow is expected to work 40-45 hours/week. Approximately 30% of their time is spent in educational experiences and 70% providing supervised care. A salary and benefits package is provided.

Clinical Lead Physical Therapist
Leon Root Motion Analysis Laboratory (LRMALab)

Overview:
The Leon Root, MD Motion Analysis Laboratory (LRMALab) at the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) is seeking a physical therapist with expertise in human movement analysis. The Clinical Lead Physical Therapist in the LRMALab is an exciting and unique position that has clinical, research, educational, and leadership responsibilities. Candidates must possess excellent clinical, personal, written, and verbal communication skills and be a strong multitasker. The ideal candidate will have the following strengths and experience. A valid New York State physical therapy license is required.
Clinical:
- Five years or more performing clinical motion analysis which includes hands-on evaluation of the patient, placing marker sets upon patient anatomical landmarks, measuring ground reaction forces, computing 3D kinematics and kinetics, measuring barefoot and in-shoe plantar pressures, measuring surface and fine wire EMG, measuring temporal-distance foot-fall parameters, use of wearable transducers including inertial measurement units (IMUs), accelerometers, or in-shoe force measurement systems, as well as use of markerless motion capture systems.
- Documentation of clinical findings, 3D kinematics and kinetics plantar pressures, and EMGs as well as the interpretation of the results.
- Work closely in a multi-disciplinary team of PTs, OTs, Scientists, Engineers, Biomechanists, Administrators, Physicians, and Surgeons.
- Lead and participate in the weekly motion analysis rounds: a multi-disciplinary team that discusses results, interprets findings, and makes treatment recommendations to be included in clinical reports.
- Apply appropriate CPT codes for the testing performed.
- Conduct Biodex and handheld muscle dynamometry.
- Provide leadership to the clinical team within the LRMALab team as well as the other LRMALab staff.
- Use of electronic medical records (e.g., EPIC)
Research:
- Develop (PI), collaborate (co-I), and support (consultant) research within the LRMALab, Rehabilitation and Performance and HSS.
- Lead and/or participate in grant development consistent with background and training.
- Lead and/or participate in CRP/IRB protocol development for human subject assurance.
- Support scientists and engineers by performing hand-on research test-subject assessments, marker placement, muscle dynamometry, etc.
