Overview

Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) was founded in 1863 and is recognized as a world leader in musculoskeletal medicine. Though located in New York City, HSS treats patients from throughout the New York City Metropolitan Area, New York State, the United States, and over 90 countries who seek its internationally recognized specialized care. HSS has 215 beds and 36 operating rooms and performs more than 31,000 surgeries per year. In addition, it handles more than 400,000 non-surgical outpatient visits annually. It is an affiliate of the New York-Presbyterian Healthcare System and Weill Cornell Medical College. HSS has been a leader in pioneering new procedures, including: pioneering the modern total knee replacement; designing a revolutionary fiber optic probe for distinguishing healthy and diseased cartilage during surgery; developing new imaging protocols for MRI evaluation of cartilage; pioneering the development of minimally invasive spine surgery techniques that eliminate the need for spinal fusion; perfecting surgical techniques for minimally invasive hip and knee procedures, minimizing hospital stays for qualified patients; and leading the world in the application of regional anesthesia techniques.

A major goal of the research division is to foster translational research through the establishment of teams that bring clinicians and basic scientists together to solve disease-related problems and to translate research findings and accomplishments into new technologies that improve patient care and outcomes.

POSITION OVERVIEW: 

The Director will report to the Sr. Director of Decision Support. He/she will also work closely with the Vice President of Budget, key members of Finance management, and senior leadership and management throughout HSS.

 

The Director will take a lead role in the operations of the decision support system, Strata Decision Technology, and help direct and guide all processes and initiatives related to decision support operations.   

 

RESPONSIBILITIES: The specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Manages, prioritizes, and coordinates organization-wide decision support initiatives to align with the strategic goals of the Hospital.
  • Monitors data and reporting projects to ensure integrity of all information out of Strata; performs audits to aid in the accuracy of unit costs for all the Hospital’s entities.
  • Partner with service area leads to identify ways to improve upon the existing cost model as well as incorporating new ventures into the model.
  • In collaboration with the service area leads, create reports that identify opportunities and analyze trends in order to provide actionable data for the department.
  • Assist with auditing our contract management system in Strata and enhance our existing revenue analytics
  • Build upon existing dashboards to highlight various key indicators around the Hospital.
  • Provide training and assistance to analysts and customers as necessary.

EDUCATION:

  • A bachelor’s degree in finance/business/public health or other relevant specialty is required. MBA, MPH, or other advanced degrees are desirable, but not required.

EXPERIENCE, COMPETENCIES, AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:

  • Solid experience (7+ years) of hospital experience is required. Experience in a successful, dynamic and growing organization is highly desirable.
  • Experience with Strata Decision Technology products is preferred but not required.
  • Must have knowledge of hospital financial accounting concepts.
  • Technology and system savvy. Strong Excel, Word, and PowerPoint skills.
  • Capable of quickly gaining a strong understanding of the operations and finances of the hospital.
  • Strong financial, analytical, and problem-solving skills. Experience resolving issues through innovative problem solving and solution development.
  • Possesses a continuous-improvement mind-set. Tackles challenges and issues with a fresh approach; is creative and thinks “out of the box.”
