The Nurse Practitioner (NP)/Physician Assistant (PA) is an advanced practice provider with training in the medical model of care. Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) NPs /PAs are committed to personalized, high-quality healthcare and are held to the same legal and ethical standards of care as physicians and surgeons. Autonomously and in collaboration with healthcare professionals and other individuals, the NP/PA provides a full range of primary, acute, and specialty healthcare services, including:

  • Diagnosing and treating acute and chronic conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, infections, and injuries
  • Ordering, performing and interpreting diagnostic tests such as lab work and x-rays
  • Prescribing medications and other treatments
  • Managing patients’ overall care
  • Counseling
  • Educating patients on disease prevention and positive health and lifestyle choices

HSS NPs/PAs serve pediatric and adult patients in an extensive range of practice settings throughout the hospital and its local and regional ambulatory sites. Their specialty and subspecialty areas include: Adult Reconstruction and Joint Replacement (ARJR), Anesthesia (PACU/OSCU/SDU), Anticoagulation, Cardiology, Diabetes Care, Intensive Care, Metabolic Bone, Occupational Health, Pain Management, Pediatric Orthopedics, Post-Operative Care, Radiology, Spine, Trauma, Wound Care, and private practice (physician and surgeon offices).

 

The HSS pain management nurse practitioner/physician assistant participates in daily patient rounds for patients on the pain service and provide health care, teaching, counseling and treatment to patients, including assessments of patients’ medical, pharmacological and psychosocial needs. The NP/PA monitors and evaluates the patients' treatment and health care plan for effectiveness, and coordinates admission and discharge for pain management inpatients, including obtaining relevant information regarding medication and ensuring that appropriate discharge prescriptions and follow up appointments are made.

The Pain Management NP/PA role:

  • Performs pre-surgical consultations with patients identified as opioid-tolerant
  • Responsible for ongoing operational effectiveness of the pre-op chronic pain consult program
  • Collaborates with pre-surgical screening colleagues to ensure efficient workflow and resourceful use of space, patient and clinician time
  • Provides health care, teaching, counseling and treatment to patients, including assessments of patients’ medical, pharmacological and psychosocial needs
  • Monitors and evaluates the patient’s treatment and health care plan for effectiveness and modify as necessary
  • Orders tests as needed (e.g., toxicology screen)
  • Contributes to the formulation of the inpatient’s analgesic plan of care   
  • Liaises with the outside pain medicine prescriber
  • Sets the patient’s expectations for pain management care at HSS
  • Performs recuperative pain and inpatient chronic pain consults as needed
  • Documents all assessments, findings, progress and care provided in the medical record

Qualifications

Requirements:

  • master’s or doctoral degree from an accredited school of nursing/physician assistant program
  • licensure as an NP and RN in the state of NY/licensure as a PA in the state of NY
  • board certification as an NP/PA
  • DEA
  • CPR certification: BLS
  • three (3)+ years of related experience as an NP in an inpatient or outpatient setting; experience in pain management preferred
  • experience with an EMR (preferably Epic)

All NPs/PAs are supported by the HSS Center for Advanced Practice Nursing or Physician Assistant Department, respectively. The Center is dedicated to promoting and cultivating the role of the advanced practice provider (APP) within HSS as well as among the medical community in New York City and nationally. The Center develops policy and processes, provides resources, and guides the utilization and management of all advanced practice nurses—NPs and CRNAs—practicing throughout the hospital and at its local and regional sites.
