Research Assistant

Part-Time, Variable shifts

 

The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed. They are not intended to be construed as an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, duties and skills required of personnel so classified.

 

SUMMARY:

 

The HSS Spine Development and Regeneration Lab aims to enhance clinical care through discovers from basic and translational research conducted in Dr. Dahia’s Lab. Under the supervision of the Principal Investigator, the Research Assistant will oversee the collection of data, screening, enrolling, and following-up patients that receive treatment in the Spine Service of HSS, and wet-lab experiments with clinical samples. This individual will be an integral member of the research team in compliance with all regulatory, institutional, and departmental requirements. The candidate will play an integral role in day-to-day research activities in the lab, and patient coordination, ensuring efficient operations. 

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Performs informed consent procedures following all regulatory guidelines. 
  • Collects sample, transport to the lab, and immediately process the samples for downstream biological analysis or tissue culture as required for the research study.
  • Develops and maintains research databases with guidance from Principal Investigator.
  • Performs data collection and data entry for studies as requested. Ensures accuracy when transcribing data from data collection sheets, medical records, or electronic institutional databases or other source documents into databases.
  • Facilitates completion of all internal documentation needed for research (IRB applications, conflict of interest forms, data collection forms, etc.)
  • Performs IRB submissions for initial approvals, re-approvals, amendments, etc.  Prepares, submits, and files IRB and all regulatory documents, ie., data collection sheets, protocol amendments, protocol deviations, adverse event forms, etc.
  • Prepares information required for reports to Principal Investigator as needed.
  • Ensures that all research related regulatory, institutional, and departmental compliance requirements are met as appropriate.
  • Conducts statistical data analysis and prepares statistical graphs and tables for research presentations, abstract and manuscript preparation or for other publications as requested by the Principal Investigator. 
  • Provides timely progress reports for each research project at regular intervals determined by the Principal Investigator. 
  • Prepares and maintains orderly files for all research studies, including both electronic and hard copy paper files in regulatory binders. Works closely with HSS internal monitor for guidance on these activities.
  • Maintains and enhances professional growth through participation in weekly lab meetings, department seminars, and internal training sessions to keep abreast of trends in research and on-going activities in the department.
  • Other duties and projects as designated by the Principal Investigator.
  • Displays a positive attitude toward work assignments, performance feedback, and interactions with co-workers, patients, families, and visitors.
  • Willingly adheres to department and hospital policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrates and embodies organizational and departmental core values.

Qualifications

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Education/Training: Bachelor’s degree required

Must be willing to work flexible hours.

 

Experience:                

  • Must have a flexible schedule that allows for variable shifts throughout the week.
  • Experience in clinical research in a hospital setting
  • Prior Epic experience
  • Knowledge of Good Clinical Practice and Good Technology Practice
  • CITI training is preferred
  • Experience in laboratory-based basic science research is preferred
  • Knowledge in applied statistics, and prior experience working with SPSS and GraphPad Prism to analyze and visualize data and prepare reports
  • Proficient use of computers and software
  • Attention to details
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
