Research Bioengineer for Spine Surgery Applications

 

A position is available for a postdoctoral bioengineer in the Biomechanics Department at Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS).  A masters level bioengineer with at least three years of experience in a research laboratory will also be considered.

 

Preference will be given to candidates with expertise in materials fabrication, surface chemistry characterization, and cell/tissue engineering. 

 

We are looking for an individual with the following character traits, abilities, and skills:

  • Interest in the surface properties of materials currently or potentially used in spine surgery, and how those surfaces affect biologically relevant cellular/tissue behaviors
  • Experience in surface characterization of medical materials (e.g. SEM, XPS surface analysis, electrochemistry/corrosion testing) preferred
  • Experience in cell handling (tissue culture, FACS), tissue/cellular imaging preferred
  • Demonstrated expertise using scientific and statistical computing software, such as MATLAB and R
  • Interest or Experience in mechanical characterization of biological tissues or models of biologic substrates (e.g. hydrogels), primarily at the micro and nanoscale
  • Highly self-motivated, able to work both independently and in multidisciplinary teams including engineers, biologists, clinicians and statisticians
  • Ability to multi-task and keep multiple projects on track simultaneously.
  • Ability to work independently within timelines using critical thinking skills towards a long-term vision
  • Scientific creativity and ability to synthesize preliminary data toward development of novel, logical hypotheses
