Director, Community and Physician Engagement

 

Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) is a world leader in orthopedics, rheumatology and rehabilitation. Anchored by our hospital on the Upper East Side of New York City, and with Outpatient Centers across the tri-state area, HSS is rapidly expanding to bring world-class care to our patients and neighbors throughout New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut.

The Director, Community and Physician Engagement is a highly visible team member with external and internal stakeholders. S/he is responsible for leading a team of engaged and enthusiastic liaisons who will represent the organization’s comprehensive services and programs to regional partners throughout priority catchment areas within the tri-state region Connecticut, New York (Hudson Valley, New York City,  Long Island) and New Jersey (Northern and Central Counties). In this effort, the incumbent will be responsible for cultivating and leveraging relationships to grow business in the emerging markets. Regional partners include, but are not limited to: primary care, specialty, and other referring physicians; corporate partners; schools and academic districts; local sports leagues and community organizations. S/he supports these efforts by identifying and prioritizing targets within all regional markets that align best with site-specific and enterprise-wide strategic priorities. In this effort, s/he will collaborate with Department leadership and with internal stakeholders on the development of regional go-to market sales plans, communicating concerns identified in the field to the appropriate parties and advising medical and administrative leadership on strategic opportunities. This position will be responsible for creating a regional outreach strategic plan and overseeing its execution by the Community and Physician Engagement team with support and collaboration from physicians and providers practicing within regional market locations.

 

 

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • BA or BS required2 years staff management experience
  • Valid driver’s license and regular access to a motor vehicle. (Daily travel throughout the tri-state area required.)

Experience

  • Minimum 5-10 years experience developing and executing physician and community outreach programs on behalf of a health system, pharmaceutical company, large group practice, or similar business.
  • Direct sales/business development (i.e. pharmaceutical) experience preferred.
  • Experience with healthcare business operations and ambulatory network development a plus.
  • Self-directed, with a demonstrated ability to work independently.
  • Experience managing teams and individuals – skills development, coaching, mentoring, performance improvement, discipline/correction
  • Demonstrated capacity to multi-task and utilize critical thinking skills to identify and solve problems.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) required; experience with Salesforce preferred.

 

Other Requirements

Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Cultivating relationships and identifying strategic opportunities in the regional market.
• Researching and investigating regional stakeholder landscapes to identify and prioritize target organizations (Healthcare, Corporate, Non-Profit, Civic, Athletic, Academic, etc.) for outreach activation.
• Meeting with target organization leaders to introduce and formalize partnership opportunities.
• Developing communication channels to cultivate relationships with local partners (i.e. telecommunications, e-mail, hotlines).
• Creating feedback mechanisms for established partners to share questions/concerns.
• Identifying and engaging corporations, community organizations, and other potential partners for collaboration.
• Identifying and recruiting provider resource support for each region to execute tactical objectives.
• Developing and maintaining continuous interaction with MD’s and their offices to understand needs, present opportunities, and cultivate relationships
• Monitoring the external environment, including competitor activity, and providing market intelligence to internal stakeholders.

Building and managing a team of outreach liaisons.
• Managing engaged and enthusiastic outreach liaisons that promote HSS programs and services in accordance with regional strategy and priority objectives.
• Creating and refining metrics-driven tools to measure performance of liaison outreach efforts.
• Ongoing management and staff development via mentoring and coaching, including the development of training material and outreach modules
• General team management, including time-keeping, performance reviews, etc.

Representing the organization’s comprehensive services and programs.
• Demonstrating a proficient knowledge of the organization’s strategic plan, continuum of services, and provider expertise that allows for accurate and appropriate communication with referral sources.
• Planning and executing events, and participating in or attending public speaking engagements, trade shows, business meetings, and seminars to promote the expertise of the hospital and its physicians/programs across the full breadth of the regional market catchment area. (Occasional evening and weekend hours required.)
• Comfort conducting meetings using virtual technology (eg, Zoom/Skype)

Helping the organization achieve its operational and strategic goals.
• Developing methods for outreach liaison team to systematically gather and communicate feedback from partners to improve the organization’s operations and services, and better engage its referral sources.
• Utilizing technology tools to facilitate referrals and follow-up communications
• Leading the design and content development of marketing collateral and sales material to support outreach activities; collaborating with marketing partners to facilitate execution of designs.
• Creating and implementing tactical plans (i.e. standard product offerings) for each identified priority stakeholder category to support agreed upon strategies and market objectives.
• Staying abreast of developments in the tri-state market that affect HSS’ competitive position

Demonstrating programmatic value.
• Maintaining an effective reporting system to document all field activity.
• Preparing and submitting a weekly summary of key contacts, meetings scheduled, information gathered, issues identified, and recommendations for follow-up.
• Compiling, interpreting, and reporting on market data and programmatic performance.
• Developing and managing a departmental budget that supports programmatic goals.
