    Position:          Laboratory Support Technician

    Department:    Research Administration

    Reports to:      Research Laboratory Manager (Direct)/ Executive Director for Research Operations

    (Indirect)

               

    Job Summary

    Under the direct supervision of the Research Laboratory Manager provides maintenance support for daily operations of the Research Institute laboratories. 

     

    Duties and Responsibilities

    Maintains inventory of shared laboratory supplies

    • Tracks usage for more than 30 labs and maintains database of supplies
    • Orders supplies as needed in collaboration with Administrative Assistants
    • Ensures organization of shared supply storage areas

    Maintains inventory of Research equipment

    • Ensures all equipment tagged and updates database
    • Contacts service providers as needed to repair equipment
    • Maintains emergency contact information for freezers

    Assists with Lab Safety Training

    • Ensures all lab staff have been trained on correct use of lab equipment
    • Schedules safety training for new staff

    General Lab responsibilities

    • Ensures autoclave in good working condition and sterilizes glassware and instruments
    • Washes laboratory glassware and instruments
    • Maintains lab water baths
    • Ensures organization of fume hoods
    • Arranges chemical waste collection for labs

    Housekeeping

    • Ensures conference room set-up properly for seminars and meetings
    • Communicates with housekeeping to ensure conference room cleanliness between meetings
    • Assists in arranging biohazardous waste and sharps collection as needed
    • Other housekeeping duties as needed

     

    Requirements

    • Experience working in a lab environment a plus
    • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, Excel, Word
    • Bachelor’s degree in science or related field preferred
    • Must be organized and able to work with minimal supervision, and as part of a team
    • Good communication skills, both verbal and written
    • Knowledge of cleaning procedures and specifications of specified laboratory equipment and/or facilities
    • General knowledge of specified laboratory solutions, materials and/or media
    • Requires moderate physical work; including setting up rooms for conferences and meetings
