    Senior Director, Pathways Program

    The Senior Director, Pathways Program at HSS is responsible for developing and maintaining clinical pathways, pathway order sets, and other tools that support patient pathway adherence.  As the world leader in musculoskeletal health, HSS has more than 35 orthopedic and musculoskeletal pathways supporting more than 80% of inpatients and a growing number of ambulatory patients.  This program leverages system data and published evidence to ensure the highest standards of practice and clinical care, thereby increasing system reliability and effectiveness in order to deliver the highest quality care most efficiently.  The Senior Program Director role is highly visible, working directly with multidisciplinary teams comprised of clinical and business leaders including the Pathways Surgical and Medical Directors, the Chief Value Medical Officer, Chief Nursing Officer, VP of Nursing, VP of Quality, VP of Operations, and VP of Operational Excellence.


    Reporting to the Chief Value Medical Officer, The Pathways Program Director will:

    • Manage creation, production, and implementation of HSS pathways
    • Ensure a standard process for pathway development, deployment, updates, and improvement
    • Ensure pathways contain high quality, evidence based clinical practices
    • Facilitate the Pathways Steering Committee, composed of executives and clinical leaders, to prioritize pathway development, maintain a production schedule, identify key performance metrics and drive continuous improvement of existing pathways
    • Provide project management for interdisciplinary pathway development teams
    • Work with stakeholders to provide change management and communication to pathway users
    • Collaborate with Information Technology to ensure pathway designs are appropriately built/translated into Epic workflows
    • Leverage multiple data systems to identify quality, operational and financial benefits from pathways
    • Manage, distribute, and enhance pathway performance data
    • Work with clinical and operational leaders to improve pathways adherence
    • Codify, transfer, and embed HSS pathway knowledge to/with clinical and business partners
    • Maintain pathway intellectual property and ensure legal compliance
    • Interface with external stakeholders and increase visibility of HSS pathways program
    • Develop a vision for long term pathway program success and maintain best practice knowledge of industry standards

    The ideal candidate will have the desire to be the face of HSS pathways and grow into a senior leadership role. The role requires extensive collaboration and a deep knowledge of best practices in pathway development.  Clinical pathways and pathway data are rapidly evolving in healthcare, requiring the candidate to express an understanding of how to integrate new technologies that support pathways. 



    • Bachelor’s degree required
    • Master’s degree (MBA, MHA, MPH, etc.) required
    • Clinical degree (RN, NP, Physical Therapy, Physician Assistant, etc.) preferred but not necessary


    Desired Skills & Experience

    • Program management, management consulting, process improvement, or quality improvement experience in a top tier healthcare organization
    • Previous experience at a healthcare organization with a reputation for successful pathways adoption
    • Database management and ability to analyze data using Excel, SAS, R, SPSS, Tableau
    • Experience developing/using order sets and workflows for Epic or another electronic health record (EHR)
    • Demonstrated ability to influence and build relationships with executives and physician champions
    • History of successfully facilitating multidisciplinary clinical and business teams
    • Exceptional communication skills
    • Highly organized and detail oriented
    • Knowledge of pathway industry trends, developments, and future state directions
