  • Overview

    The Manager of the Bioskills Education Lab will have the primary responsibility for managing the development and implementation of educational lab sessions for the HSS orthopaedic residents and fellows, physician assistants and other related disciplines at HSS.  The Manager will interact with physicians, education service directors, hospital departments, professional organizations and companies such surgical device companies and cadaver suppliers.  The Manager will report directly to the VP of Education & Academic Affairs for all programmatic and administrative functions.  Major responsibilities would include, but not be limited to:

    • Promote and manage the BSEL use as a residency training facility at HSS
    • Managing curriculum needs of BSEL for all orthopaedic services, rheumatology and other subspecialty services at HSS including scheduling, staffing, equipment, and assisting with teaching as needed
    • Oversee lab preparation and distribute (setup apparatus, distribute literature as needed) curriculum materials for each orthopaedic subspecialty
    • Planning content and ordering and storing necessary equipment for regular ongoing sessions with designated orthopedic residents/fellows
    • Work with the VP of Education & Academic Affairs and Resource Sr. Coordinator, Education & Academic Affairs to identify and secure potential funders such as implant companies to expand external utilization of lab
    • Develop and manage operational and capital budget for lab including oversight of supplies and transportation of all specimens
    • Oversee coordination of ordering and/or donation of all supplies and instrumentation
    • Maintain expertise in understanding all equipment; ensuring that all equipment is available, laid out and used properly during each session, and properly cleaned and stored following each session
    • Oversee proper storage, maintain inventory of all supplies, equipment and specimens used
    • Engage and mentor trainees in identifying and facilitating strategic research opportunities
    • Conduct periodic internal reviews to ensure BSEL maintains state certification requirements, lab is in compliance with receiving and removal of cadavers, medical equipment and environment, and collaboratively working with Housekeeping and Environmental Services to maintain proper functioning of the lab
    • Supervise and mentor BSEL Assistant and determine and manage staffing needs to support lab activities
    • Develop American College of Surgeons Accreditation of Education Institutes application and oversee lab activities supporting accreditation requirements
    • Determine AV resource needs for BSEL, manage and operate systems recording sessions for library archive or transmission during conferences
    • Work directly with industry to schedule, coordinate and invoice extra lab sessions
    • Coordinate International Visitors BSEL sessions
    • Work directly with Alumni Affairs Manager to schedule and coordinate alumni BSEL sessions 

    Job Requirements

    • Surgical Technology degree
    • High School Diploma or GED required
    • Orthopedic and/or operating room experience (3-5 years)
    • Bachelor’s Degree highly desirable
    • Excellent communication skills
    • Proficient computer skills
    • Knowledge in the use of audiovisual equipment
